Women Trinamul Congress leaders today held a meeting at Hazra Park to protest against the derogatory remark by Giriraj Singh, Union minister for rural development against Mamata Banerjee.

Women Trinamul Congress leaders today held a meeting at Hazra Park to protest against the derogatory remark by Giriraj Singh, Union minister for rural development against Mamata Banerjee. Mr Singh had criticized Miss Banerjee for taking part in a dance with Bollywood stars at the inaugural function of Kolkata International Film Festival which was held in the city on Tuesday.
Chandrima Bhattacharya, president of Trinamul Mahila Congress, said, “What Mr Singh had said is an example of his breeding. The BJP leaders do not have any respect for women and they have learnt this from their leader Narendra Modi who had to take recourse in catcalls during election meetings ahead of 2021 Assembly election.
“People of Bengal did not like it and they punished the BJP in elections,” she said. Dr Shashi Panja, veteran party leader and state minister for women and child development and social welfare said Mr Singh’s detestable comments are not just an insult to Miss Banerjee but a reflection of his own character. She tweeted “ @girirajsinghbjp’s detestable comments are not just an insult to Smt@MamataOfficial but a reflection of his own character, and by extension the moral bankruptcy @BJP4India.” “@BJP4Bengal MLAs must recognize their responsibility and apologize on Giriraj Singh’s behalf. Failure to do so will be a clear display of their support for misogyny and confirmation of their encouragement for such disrespectful behaviour towards women.”

In Delhi, women Trinamul Congress MPs started a demonstration at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi inside the Lok Sabha premises. The MPs held placards condemning Mr Singh’s comments. Trinamul Congress leader said the very minister who has made such derogatory comments . Mohua Moitra, Trinamul Congress Lok Sabha MP said the BJP leaders cannot stand women in power. The comments of Mr Singh reflect insecurity.
In Nahati, Dey defeated his nearest rival, BJP's Rupak Mitra by a margin of 48,912 votes. Left Front-supported CPI-M-L candidate Dabajyoti Majumder and the Congress' Paresh Nath Sarkar ended in the third and fourth positions, respectively, and forfeited their deposits.
