Noor Jehan, the paternal cousin of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is taking a political plunge. Jahan, who lives in Pakistan, will be contesting in the upcoming assembly elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from PK-77 constituency.

According to reports, Jehan will appeal for votes as an independent candidate though she belongs to Awami National Party (ANP) – a secular, Left-leaning Pashtun nationalist party.

“I want to work for women’s empowerment. I’d like to focus on the problems in my constituency,” Jehan is quoted as saying by The Express Tribune.

A resident of Shah Wali Qataal area, Jehan has reportedly visited SRK twice including a two-month long stay in 1997. Reports say that the families maintain close ties till date.

Jehan’s brother, Mansoor, is leading her election campaign. According to the Pakistani daily, the family was a part of the Khudai Khidmatgar movement of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan.

“We have a political legacy attached to the family,” he was quoted as saying, adding that his sister has previously served as a councillor and is now contesting as an Independent.
