The state Assembly passed the Establishment of Odisha Universities of Health Sciences to bring medical and paramedical institutions in the state-affiliated to different universities in the state under one common umbrella.
A number of medical and paramedical institutions exist providing degree or diploma or training certificates and are affiliated to general universities dealing with multifarious fields like humanities, science, commerce, medical nursing and paramedical curriculum. These Universities have no specialization in the study of Medical & Paramedical Sciences.

As there is no common authority to guide, assist or direct the various institutions in regard to manpower, infrastructure and maintenance of the quality of education planning and to advise them on different issues to support the health services of the state, Establishment of Universities of Health Sciences will address this serious lacuna, stated the bill. Proper affiliation, systematic instruction, training etc with a degree of uniformity can be achieved under one authority.
