Israel President Reuven Rivlin met with the US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt to push for an agreement between Palestinians and Israelis, media reports said.

According to a statement issued by Rivlin's office on Wednesday, Rivlin and Greenblatt reviewed how Israelis and Palestinians could live in peace and security and discussed the ongoing efforts to end the conflict, Efe news reported.

Rivlin expressed his willingness to support the peace process and wished the US envoy "success on his complex mission".

Greenblatt also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday to discuss how to combat the instigation of violence and prepare for the Palestinian leader's visit to the White House, whose date has not been finalised yet.

Abbas said that a "historic" peace agreement is possible under Trump's leadership and this deal will enhance security throughout the region.

The Palestinian president insisted on defending the two-state solution as a strategic choice.

Greenblatt pointed out that the meeting was positive and productive on the current situation, noting that they talked about how to move towards peace and strengthen the capacity of the Palestinian security forces.

The US diplomat also had a five-hour meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.
