India and the US are expected to discuss the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions following the Pulwama terror attack and ways to step up bilateral cooperation to combat terrorism as Chief of the Army Staff Gen Bipin Rawat begins his five-day maiden official visit to the US from Tuesday.
Gen Rawat will interact with top military hierarchy of the US Armed Forces with a view to take forward the military to military cooperation.
The Army chief will also visit the US Military Academy at West Point and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence said on Monday.
Gen Rawat will interact with Gen Joseph F Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen Mark A Milley, Chief of Staff of the US Army, to discuss military cooperation issues of mutual interest.
Gen Rawat is also an alumnus of the Command and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth. ‘’The visit to the US aims to give an impetus to the military ties and enhance strategic engagements. The functional experience gained during the visit shall further enhance Indo-US relationship,’’ the release added.
During the visit, the Army chief is also expected to discuss the direct support by Pakistan to terrorist activities in India and aiding and funding of terrorist groups like JeM and LeT, which have carried out a series of terror attacks in India. The situation in Af-Pak region is also expected to figure prominently during talks with his American interlocutors.
