Last year the German automobile giant, BMW unveiled the BMW iX5, a concept car that will also be constructed in a small number, according to the manufacturer.
And now in 2022 the company has officially announced that it has begun manufacturing hydrogen-based fuel cells at its headquarters in Munich following a lengthy final development phase.
The concept car will be powered by a pair of electric motors. Instead of using stored electrical energy from a battery pack like, the iX5 instead uses a fuel cell that can produce up to 125kW, which will pull out energy from a chemical reaction between stored hydrogen and oxygen from the air.

The zero-emission powertrain option will be promoted in a few places next spring once the vehicles that have begun production are ready. The extreme fuel-cell technology utilised in the BMW iX5 delivers a substantially greater range and maintains performance in both hot and cold conditions with its hydrogen backed motor engine.
The absence of a bulky lithium-ion battery pack and the firmer suspension need to support it are two further benefits of hydrogen-electric vehicles. The risk of fire is eliminated, and the vehicle becomes significantly lighter as a result.
However, the corporation will only create a small amount of the iX5 and assess its potential before deciding definitively on its future.
