There seems to be euphoria in diplomatic and media circles after the meetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on the sidelines of 16th Brics Summit at Kazan on 23 October 2024.
The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Brics summit at Kazan marks a significant moment in the evolving dynamics between two of the world’s largest economies.
India needs to be cognizant of two points the real Chinese intentions and the approach it will adopt to achieve its intended goal. We must not allow the comity of nations to get fooled by the overt display of eagerness to settle the current conflict through dialogue. Secondly, whatever resolution we achieve in this case, going back to status quo ante will be a temporary acceptance of peace by Xi Jinping who is trying to jettison Deng Xiaoping's approach and adopt the more aggressive Maoist philosophy.
Though China is on course to intensify repression under Xi Jinping, greater international solidarity and willingness to challenge Beijing might have helped Hong Kong.
The legislation, which passed Congress almost unanimously, requires the US administration to determine which Chinese officials are responsible for the “arbitrary detention, torture and harassment” of Uighurs and other minorities.
They may not say so in discussions but an article in the CCP-owned website, sohu.com of 16 June, conveys a different perception.
The decision to designate these entities is not based on any content produced by these entities, nor does it place any restrictions on what the designated entities may publish in the US.
