While India has the maximum number of blind people in the world, most do not know that in more than 85 per cent of the cases, the condition is preventable, said experts on Thursday on World Sight Day.
On World Sight Day, the doctors informed that ROP is a disease that would have led to blindness in just three to four weeks after birth if not detected and treated in time.
In the run up to World Sight Day, the doctors of ICARE Eye Hospital said since the incidence of severe ROP is about 3%, it is estimated that around 5,000 children go blind in the country every year due to this entirely preventable cause of childhood blindness.
