WHO report: New, unidentified illness in Congo

A new, unidentified illness has been reported in the northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which is buffeted by multiple public health and humanitarian crises, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday.

Although only a few persons in the U.K. are infected by Omicron, preliminary data suggests that the number is rising. A very large number of persons worldwide had been infected earlier with different variants of the coronavirus. A large number are also fully vaccinated. All these persons have attained some level of immunity; they have started to produce proteins that can protect them against infection.

“We cannot end this pandemic unless we solve the vaccine crisis,” said the WHO chief, even as he criticised wealthier nations for rushing to administer booster jabs to healthier people, stating that while vaccines are “in every country’s best interest” the emergence of the new variant ~ a highly-mutated coronavirus ~ and other such variants will continue to cause concern until the entire world’s population is equally vaccinated.

The WHA May session this year decided to set up a working group to consider the findings and recommendations of a number of panels and committees on global preparedness for Covid-19 before starting their discussions on the potential new "legally binding agreement between nations," on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.
