Patel has replaced Vijay Rupani who had abruptly resigned on Saturday, a year ahead of the state assembly elections.
Rupani did not give any reason for his resignation and just thanked the “BJP leadership for giving him the opportunity” to serve as the Chief Minister.
The Congress leaders say that the BJP won the Municipal elections because of other factors and will not be able to win the assembly polls whether they change the captain or not.
Earlier in the day, the authorities had suspended Surat Deputy chief fire officer SK Acharya and Fire officer Kirti Modh.
