According to the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was in a remote mountain region northeast of the state capital Boise.
Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez declared a state of emergency after Tuesday's quake, which forced an automatic shutdown of the power grid.
The epicentre, with a depth of 45.04 km, was initially determined to be at 30.2741 degrees south latitude and 71.564 degrees west longitude.
There were no reports of injuries or damage from the quake.
No major damage or casualties have been reported yet but the US seismologists have said that the disasters was potentially widespread.
The quake struck at a depth of about 10 kilometre at 4.18 GMT, the US Geological Survey reports.
Shortly after the earthquake, President Jovenel Moise urged the population to remain calm, adding that the risk management system and regional civil protection directorates were on alert to help residents of affected areas where access was difficult due to poor infrastructure.
