The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that no further FIRs would be registered against Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udaynidhi Stalin – son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin – without its permission on his “eradicate Sanatan Dharma” remark in 2023.
In a showdown with the Modi government for “intimidating” Tamil Nadu to accept the New Education Policy (NEP) and its three-language formula for release of Central funds for the state, Deputy Chief Minister and ruling DMK’s Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, on Tuesday, warned that the BJP-led Union government’s haughtiness would only lead to another uprising against Hindi imposition.
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin Monday opposed the Centre’s three-language policy, accusing the BJP-led central government of attempting to impose Hindi on the state.
“Many have started coming up with the motto of destroying the DMK. But, it is not necessary for me to respond to them. The people will give them a fitting reply,” he said, speaking at a marriage reception of a party functionary in Thanjavur, 343 km south of Chennai, on Thursday.
Speculation is rife about Udhayanidhi’s appointment as the number two in the Tamil Nadu government along with a cabinet reshuffle.
The buzz about cabinet reshuffle and an expansion, ahead of Stalin’s foreign tour to the United States on August 22, has acquired added significance with this long expected coronation of the DMK’s crown prince.
A minor rejig of the state Cabinet may take place, with Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran and R Gandhi, Minister for Textiles and Handloom likely to be replaced.
