Mizoram recorded 12.80 pc voter turnout till 9 am as voting kicked off in the Northeastern state from 7 am, the Election Commission of India stated.
After eight hours of voting, the turnout was more than ten percentage points below the previous Legislative Council elections held five years ago. After at least five years of turmoil, most particularly the Umbrella movement, candidates were screened by the government as “patriots” before being declared eligible to run.
The South Kashmir district of Anantnag and Srinagar registered poor percentage of 1 and 1.8 percent, respectively, till 2 pm. Police said that the polling went smoothly.
Re-polling in 73 booths of Kairana Lok Sabha constituency remained peaceful as voters came out in good numbers beating the heat. Till 5 pm, about 53 per cent voting was reported.
