Originally supposed to commence on July 24, 2020 the Olympics had to be postponed to July 23 to August 8, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
FIFA on Saturday also cancelled the Under-17 and Under-20 Women's World Cup, scheduled to be played later this year in India and Panama/Costa Rica.
Earlier, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were pushed back by the IOC in consultation with the Japanese government, in view of the health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
