Globally acclaimed Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on Monday apologised to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his action may have caused.
Calling ancient Indian masters as his source of inspiration, the leader called Indian tradition 'extremely rich' and 'useful'.
The award, constituted by the Gandhi Mandela Foundation, is in recognition of promoting the values and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela in the interest of global peace and freedom.
"On behalf of all my fellow Tibetans, may I take this opportunity to express my gratitude once again. I wish you every success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the French people and in contributing to a more peaceful and harmonious world."
The Dalai Lama recalled having had the honour of meeting Mukherjee on several occasions over the years, most recently in 2016.
He was interacting with students from the Law Faculty of Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, National Institute of Technology, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh and Chapra Central School, Saran, Bihar.

1929 born Gyalo Thondup, the elder brother of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, started the noodle factory in 1966-1967 in Kalimpong, after he fled Tibet in 1952
“There are millions of Tibetans in Tibet who have expressed unwavering faith and prayers for my health and long life. I accept this offering as being made on their behalf,” he added.
