Last week, the ECB had postponed the inaugural edition of 'The Hundred' -- a new 100-balls-per-side format to be played by eight teams.
Owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the two-time IPL champions had in 2015 acquired Caribbean Premier League side Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel, who are now known as Trinbago Knight Riders.
With the tournament delayed, the ECB has sent a letter to the players informing them about the termination of their contracts.
With England not keen on organising the inaugural edition of the tournament behind closed doors, the tournament stands postponed as of now.
ECB thinks that had the competition been held behind closed doors it would have directly contradicted the tournament’s aim to attract a broader audience.
The first edition is set to be played from July 17 to August 15 across different venues in England but if reports are to be believed, it is set to be pushed back by the ECB.
Warner was drafted in Southern Brave for the tournament, which features a new format of the game, in October.
The ECB are adamant the Hundred will attract a new audience vital to safeguarding cricket's long-term future.
"It's an honour to be asked to captain Welsh Fire in the first year of The Hundred," said Smith.
