The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the states falling in the National Capital Region to constitute teams of officials from police and revenue departments to ensure strict enforcing of the measures under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat and curb air-pollution in the national capital.
Terming the restrictions as “impractical”, the Supreme Court on Thursday put on hold the Kerala High Court's order on the use of elephants and observing distances between them, the public, flambeau, and the percussion display during festival parades, including the ‘Thrissur Pooram”.
The Supreme Court will expand its focus on air pollution to other cities in India during a hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Cautioning the Punjab authorities on the repercussions if anything untoward happens to the farmers leader, a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said, “The entire state machinery will be blamed if something untoward happens.
"We are taking the PM's security breach very seriously," said the bench, adding it will ask the committee to submit its report to it within a short span.
The top court also asked the state and Central committees to refrain from conducting inquiries till Monday.
The apex court, however, said the criteria for EWS quota issue for the upcoming years will be decided in a final hearing on March 3.
As many as 15 per cent seats in MBBS and 50 per cent seats in MS and MD courses are filled through all-India Quota from the candidates selected through the NEET.
Taking cognisance of the security breach, the MHA has sought a detailed report from the Punjab government.
