Terming it “punitive, arbitrary and illegal,” the Supreme Court on Friday set aside the termination of services of two women judicial officers in Madhya Pradesh in 2023 and directed their reinstatement, emphasising the importance of being sensitive to the gender-specific difficulties faced by women, while assessing their performance.

The top court also ruled that any circulars of arrest issued by the GST department must be strictly adhered to.
As sought by the solicitor general, the bench granted more time to the Centre to place on record its decision on deporting the foreign nationals declared residing illegally in Assam and posted the matter for hearing on March 21.
Justice Srikrishna said, "Today, things are very bad. I must confess, if I were to stand in a public square and say I don't like the face of the Prime Minister, somebody might raid me, arrest me, throw me in jail without giving me any reason. Now that is something that all of us should oppose as citizens."
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal had declined a request to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal for his statement allegedly against the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court on Thursday said the PIL alleging mismanagement of temples regulated under the state administration or misappropriation of funds collected over there, should bring some concrete proof on record, instead of bare averments.
The top court was informed that "the Karnataka government has allowed Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Idgah maidan in Bengaluru for tomorrow and day after".
The top court asked the Central government to submit its response in the matter in three weeks and scheduled the matter for hearing in October.
