The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Ashish Mishra, the prime accused in mowing down of four farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh in October 202, to respond to the allegation that witnesses were being threatened.
Pointing to the low conviction rate in the money laundering cases, a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan noted that the trial is yet to commence and, with 183 witnesses to be examined, will take a long time.
Speaking at a function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association to celebrate ‘Constitution Day’, the Chief Justice lauded the role played by the Bar in making the judiciary a robust institution.
The Rajasthan government has also tendered an apology in the court for reported contempt of the court in the case of land acquisition.
An indication of this was available, when Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Wednesday said that they are going to deliver two constitution bench judgments.
A bench comprising Justice KM Joseph, Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah expressed their anguish as senior advocate Dushyant Dave told the court that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah was making public statements relating to the matter during electioneering.
The apex court said that the case will be listed for hearing on May 15. Earlier, it had declined to interfere with the release of the controversial film and had asked the high court to decide the pleas at the first instance.
The court sought to know whether the entire trailer was against society.
The apex court asked both the Centre and the Manipur government to take adequate measures to restore normalcy.
