The Supreme Court was hearing the PIL challenging the poll panel’s communications whereby the maximum number of electors per polling station had been increased from 1200 to 1500.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna assumed office as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, following Justice DY Chandrachud’s tenure. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Dismissing the plea, a bench of Justice B R Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta said they were not convinced to interfere with the High Court order which had also refused to stay the trial.
Setting aside the Madras High court order cancelling the bail, earlier granted to 'Sattai' Durai Murugan on November 2021, a bench observed that he could not be said to have misused the liberty granted to him.
The observation from the bench came as Stalin, seeking the clubbing of the multiple FIRs registered against him across the country, relied on the top court judgments in the matters relating to media persons in support of his plea
Issuing notice to Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas - Acharya Ved Vyas Peeth Temple Varanasi and the Board of Trustees of Shree Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the bench ordered that only the priest appointed by the Vishwanath Temple Trust would perform puja at Vyas Tahkhana.
The court also noted that the Centre had already agreed to release Rs.13,068 crore after the intervention of the top court
