After 16 days of a sit-in protest demanding immediate Student Union elections, increase in fund allotment, examination in mother tongue and conduction of convocation, the SFI Presidency University Unit has got partial success.
Many protested and accused police of acting like workers of the ruling political party. They demanded to know why no justice has been delivered even though 72 hours have passed. The police deployed their forces in large numbers. Water canon was deployed to push back the agitators. The rapid action force was called in to contain the clashes.
The faculty members carried out a signature campaign on Wednesday against the NRC and the CAA and appealed to the government to rethink the long term implications of these exercises.
The notice has been issued under provisions of section 149 (preventing commission of a cognizable offence) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), an official said
The move comes after a month-long sit-in protest by students who said a non-Hindu professor could not teach because the faculty intertwined the study of religion and literature.
The agitating students also tried to march to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), where Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was addressing the university's convocation at an auditorium.
