The Scot's limp was noticeable at times as he fell 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-4 to Spain's Fernando Verdasco, whose only win over Murray in 14 prior meetings was at the 2009 Australian Open.
Wawrinka, who lost to Rafael Nadal in last year's final and won the 2015 title, was beaten in a five-set thriller.

A four-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final gave Wawrinka his third major crown.
Wawrinka will face American Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

Recent wins have propelled the Swiss master to sixth in the world after a six-month injury layoff.
