Wawrinka, who lost to Rafael Nadal in last year's final and won the 2015 title, was beaten in a five-set thriller.
"I expected a tough match," world number 15 Wawrinka told atpworldtour.com on Thursday. "He's already played a few matches here."
A four-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final gave Wawrinka his third major crown.
