In the last Assembly elections, BJP candidate Dr Ashok Lahiri secured a lead of almost 10,000 votes in the municipality area. The tenure of the elected board in the civic body expired in October 2018, while administrators have been handling matters there ever since.
Balurghat was the district headquarters of Dinajpur during British rule. The Balurghat Co-operative Bank Bhaban, the District Magistrate's Office and the City Bank Bhaban were all constructed during that period.
After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 10 ZP members, including the Sabhadhipati, had joined the BJP with Mr Mitra. The then TMC district president Arpita Ghosh had expelled the 10 from the party, while nine of the posts of the sthayee samitis had become vacant then.
In South Dinajpur district, 53 new cases of Covid19 have been detected.
Till now, 65,258 people have been detected Covid positive and 1,490 died in the state; currently, there are 19,652 active cases.
"The construction work is complete, while electrical work is going on and finishing touches are being given. There will be 95+ beds and 15 beds with ICU facility. We can start the hospital here within four to five days. We will also accommodate safe house patients here," the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr Sukumar Dey, said.
The officer on special duty for Covid-19 in north Bengal, Dr Susanta Kumar Roy, said: "The department has prepared the food chart for adult men and women in forms of leaflets. The leaflets will be distributed among the people."
The total number of Covid cases in South Dinajpur has now gone up to 552, while 309 of them have already discharged after treatment, while there are presently 243 active cases, the sources said.
