In the last Assembly elections, BJP candidate Dr Ashok Lahiri secured a lead of almost 10,000 votes in the municipality area. The tenure of the elected board in the civic body expired in October 2018, while administrators have been handling matters there ever since.
Balurghat was the district headquarters of Dinajpur during British rule. The Balurghat Co-operative Bank Bhaban, the District Magistrate's Office and the City Bank Bhaban were all constructed during that period.
After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 10 ZP members, including the Sabhadhipati, had joined the BJP with Mr Mitra. The then TMC district president Arpita Ghosh had expelled the 10 from the party, while nine of the posts of the sthayee samitis had become vacant then.
Hundreds of women TMC activists assembled in front of the Balurghat police station, while some of them carried empty LPG cylinders with them and firewood.
"I am participating in the friendly bicycle rally on instructions from the Bangladesh government and this will strengthen the friendship of both the countries," Subedar Abdul Latif said.
Eight procurement centres are functioning all over the district to collect paddy from the farmers, while they have been asked to follow all Covid19 guidelines, officials said, adding that four additional procurement centres may be opened to maintain less gathering of people.
According to one of the injured, Abir Pahan, he was standing in front of a ration shop, when the jackal attacked him from the back and bit him on his leg.
While it was not immediately clear as to who fired the shot, police have recovered the boy's body from near his residence and sent it for postmortem.
