Kharge, the first non-Gandhi president in over two decades, was declared winner after he garnered 7,897 votes against his rival Shashi Tharoor who could secure only 1,072.
On October 19 the counting of votes will start and the result will be declared as soon as the counting gets over.
The Congress delegates were voting to elect the new president of the party and in the fray are Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor.
On the 153rd anniversary of Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, "Bapu is an example of truth. Bapu is the torch of courage. Bapu is a traveller of India, sharing the sufferings of the country's people and uniting the whole of India.
He had previously met Gandhi on Monday to discuss the political turmoil in Rajasthan. Venugopal's meeting with Gandhi came a day before the final date for filing nominations for the top post in the Congress party.
After the meeting, Kharge said that there should be discipline in the party and the party has to be kept united.
Both the leaders are arriving in Delhi to attend a rally to be held in Fatehabad district on the birth anniversary of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) founder late Chaudhary Devi Lal by INLD leader OP Chautala.
