Police said acting on a specific information generated by the Shopian police about the presence of terrorists at village Check-i-Sidique Khan area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, Army's 34 RR and 178 BN of the CRPF in the said area.
Police suspect that two more terrorists are still holed up inside the target house and a flush-out operation is being carried out jointly by the police, Army and CRPF.
The accused have been charged for hatching a conspiracy, kidnapping and killing three cousins from Rajouri district in the orchards of Amshipora in Shopian in July.
But local residents and the families of three men hailing from Rajouri who went missing around the same time alleged that they had been killed in a staged encounter.
Initial reports suggested that 5 to 6 terrorists were hiding there but a police spokesman said that 3 have been killed and the operation was continuing.
As per the reports, as a joint operation by the Army, the CRPF and J-K Police, the encounter took place in the Wachi area of Shopian where the terrorists were hiding in a house.
The gunfight broke out after the security forces started a cordon and search operation in Daramdora village.
Army spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said that the terrorists indulged in an ineffective standoff at 6.45 pm. No injury to troops was reported.
Police said five protesters sustained injuries in these clashes. "They have been shifted to a hospital for treatment," a police officer said.
