At close, Sensex was up 654 points or 0.9 per cent at 76,555 and Nifty was up 206 points or 0.9 per cent at 23,163.
The 30-stock S&P BSE Sensex surged 1,016.96 points or 1.80 per cent to 57,426.92 points against its previous day's close at 56,409.96 points. The Sensex started the day in the red at 56,240.15 points and slumped to a low of 56,147.23 points in the early morning trade.
Indian markets on Friday were volatile and in negative territory during the morning trade. At 9.25 IST, the 30-share Sensex fell 0.33 per cent to 56,224 while the Nifty was down 0.31 per cent to 16,786, as market participants track global cues and wait for RBI announcements.
The benchmark indices on Indian equity markets closed flat on Thursday, due to the selling pressure prevalent in global markets. The S&P BSE ended 0.33 per cent lower at 56,409 level, 188 points down from the previous session while Nifty50 closed at 16,818, down 41 points.

The 30 stock S&P BSE Sensex slumped 509.24 points or 0.89 per cent to 56,598.28 points against its previous day's close at 57,107.52 points.
