During the trading session, the Nifty reached a day high of 24,705.0 and a low of 24,580.05 while Sensex traded within a range of 81,783.28 and 81,411.55.
At close, the Sensex was up 239.37 points or 0.31% at 77,578.38, and the Nifty was up 64.70 points or 0.28% at 23,518.50.
On Nifty, Hindalco, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel, HUL, and M&M were the top gainers, rising 1.5-4 per cent while BPCL, TCS, Infosys, Trent, and Dr Reddy's Labs were the biggest losers falling 2.5-3 per cent.
At close, the Sensex was down 110.64 points or 0.14 per cent at 77,580.31, and the Nifty was down 26.35 points or 0.11 per cent at 23,532.70.
The market opened marginally lower and extended the losses as the day progressed, dragging Nifty near 24,100 and Sensex below 79,000 amid selling across the sectors.
The India VIX rose over 2% to end at 16.6. The VIX measures market volatility and fluctuations.
India VIX, also known for assessing market anxiety, eased nearly 14% to just above 16.
The sharp decline reportedly wiped out nearly ₹17 lakh crore from the market capitalization of all listed companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
On the back of strong global cues, indices opened at fresh record high and extended the gains in the first half.
