Around 100 personnel from the state fire and rescue services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have engaged in a massive rescue operation to trace Joy, who was caught in a tunnel section of the canal that flows underneath the Central Railway station.
One of the sanitation worker was attacked with an axe when he was cleaning the locality. He sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to a hospital.
Vidya took to her Instagram handle to share a video in which she can be seen thanking a female sanitation worker.
'Monu Nagar, a sanitation worker, was hit by an unidentified vehicle near the red light of Lotus Boulevard here on Saturday. He was referred to a hospital in Delhi where he succumbed to his injuries,' a police official said.
Manual cleaning of sewers and septic tanks has come under sharp criticism since the job is degrading and hazardous for the labourers. Although, manual scavenging has been banned by India in 1993, it still continues to be practiced even in the capital of the country.
He also offered condolences to former Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva who lost her husband Niranjan Alva on Saturday.
