Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya, who won a presidential election in November, need a two-thirds 'super majority' to carry out promised constitutional changes.
Mahinda Rajapaksa became the country's youngest-ever parliamentarian in 1970 at the age of 24.
“I think it is better if we have General Elections. Many Cabinet members have already stepped down. I think it is more effective to have a Government where the President and Cabinet are from the same party,” he stated.
The organization arrived in Sri Lanka on October 22 at the request of Sri Lanka's Elections Commission.
