Police had registered a case against nine people, including Azam Khan and his son, on January 2, 2008 when violence started at the instigation of the SP leader after his vehicle was stopped by police for checking near Chhajlat police station.
The violence started in KwaZulu-Natal last week as protests against the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma, who began serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court.
