Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Thursday said 220 illegal coal mines have been detected in the Umrangso region, raising alarms over the environmental, legal, and safety challenges posed by unregulated mining activities.
Rescue operations for the five miners trapped in a waterlogged abandoned coal quarry in Umrangso, located in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, have entered their eighth day, with hopes of their survival fading rapidly.
It is the third visit of the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and National Highway (MoRTH) to the accident site.
