While stressing that the goal across countries is to promote safer, in-person learning and child care, WHO suggested that decisions on full or partial closure or reopening should be taken at the local administrative level, guided by local levels of transmission of virus and the extent to which reopening of schools may enhance transmission in the community
Justice Chandrachud emphasized that children need to go back to school but, it has to be decided by the states.
The letter says, "There is global evidence to support reopening of schools and the governments should urgently consider opening schools and resuming physical classes."
For an estimated eight million of these students, the wait for their first day of in-person learning has been over a year and counting, as they live in places where schools have been closed throughout the pandemic.
The state government has said that decision to postpone the reopening of schools was taken after the government analysed the feedback from parents and teachers. Parents of some schools wanted the educational institutions to reopen, but others were against such a move because of the Covid crisis, the government said
Students can attend school but on a voluntary basis. Students will attend schools only with the written consent of parents. However, teachers and students who live in containment zones are not to attend schools from next week onwards.
