Inundation threat after barrage discharge crosses 60,000 cusecs

Incessant rainfall caused by sustained depression over the Damodar East sub-basin in the last couple of days resulted the Durgapur barrage to open 16 of its 34 lock-gates resulting a discharge of 60210 cusecs at 6 pm today, posing a minor inundation threat to the lower valley basin.

City still faces 23pc rain deficit

An overcast sky and showers on most of the days for the last twenty days has also failed to make up for the deficit rainfall in Kolkata. The city continues to be deficit in seasonal rainfall despite having several rainy days.

Washing away badly constructed bridges, flooding illegally constructed basements, causing potholes in newly inaugurated roads, and revealing non-existent drainage of so-called smart cities, the rain gods mercilessly exposed the shamefully poor construction and maintenance of expensive infrastructure.
