Some farmers were injured following lathicharge by the police to disperse a group of farmers who were heading towards Karnal to protest against a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) meeting attended by the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The DMK government headed by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin had announced that a separate budget for agriculture will be presented by the government earlier.
Khattar said, in the second wave of the infection, the spread of Covid-19 has started from educational institutions, “so there is a need to be more vigilant, especially there”.
The Morcha, an umbrella organisation of protesting farm unions, along with the Bharatiya Kisan Morcha, Ganna Kisan Sangharsh Samity (constituents of the SKM) and other farm unions, are campaigning in poll-bound states and appealing to the people, including farmers, students and civil society to not vote for the BJP in the Assembly elections.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, also comprising of Justices LN Rao and Vineet Saran, said that the Delhi Police has all the authority to deal in this matter.
The NIA on Sunday summoned 40 people, including farmer leader Baldev Singh Sirsa and Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu for questioning in a case related to the banned outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ).
The ninth round of talks was held days after the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the three farm laws ‘until further notice’. The next round of talks scheduled for January 19 which is the day when the court appointed committee was also likely to start the negotiations to end the deadlock.
Rahul Gandhi while leading protest outside Delhi Raj Bhawan, said, “Farm laws are not to help farmers, but to finish them. BJP govt will have to withdraw farm laws; Congress will not relent till these laws are repealed,”
The decision has come a day ahead of the next round of talks between the farmer unions and government. The matter will now go back to the apex court for further orders.
