Amid rising tomato prices that are burning a hole in common man's pocket across the country, the government on Friday said the prices of the commodity are expected to stabilise within the next 15 days.
The surge in farm prices is only being partially passed on to the consumers, thereby securing the interests of both the stakeholders -- consumers and farmers.
According to the Tamil Nadu Spinning Association and reports from other places, the average price of cotton was Rs35,000 a candy (345 kg) in October 2020 and it rose to Rs 55,000 in October 2021, when the new cotton season started.
According to the vegetable vendors too, there will be no reduction in price in the near future amid the shortfall in supply.
The farmers at Goghat Kamarpukur Dankbanglo Wholesale Market threw their vegetables on the road as a mark of protest for being deliberately deprived of a justified price.
The first meeting of the council has been scheduled for 28 May. It will discuss, deliberate and prepare a robust action plan for bringing out a tangible improvement in this field.
Price increases for food commodities, of which Russia and Ukraine are large producers, and fertilisers, which rely on natural gas as a production input, have been the largest since 2008, the report noted.
While the high price has forced the ordinary people to cut down the consumption drastically, many roadside dhabas and takeaway eateries have stopped serving lemons.
"Over the past year, the cost of Company's vehicles continues to be adversely impacted due to increase in various input costs. Therefore, it has become imperative for the Company to pass on some impact of the above additional costs to customers through a price hike," Maruti Suzuki said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges.
The flight ticket prices have risen from Rs 50,000 to over Rs 70,000 and the students say it is this financial hurdle that is forcing them to stay put despite the advisory by the Indian government. On normal days, the flight tickets would cost Rs 21,000-Rs 26,000. But now, due to the Russia-Ukraine tensions, the rates have jacked up.
