The Secretary,Department of Financial Services (DFS),M. Nagaraju, on Monday suggested means for doing fresh Know Your Customer (re-KYC) process for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) account holders.
A notable achievement in Uttar Pradesh is the significant participation of women, with approximately 5 crore of these accounts belonging to female account holders. The state also leads in the distribution of RuPay cards through the Jan Dhan accounts.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), one of the largest financial inclusion initiatives launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, completed a decade of successful implementation on Wednesday.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that a total of 53.13 crore Jan Dhan accounts for the poor have been opened in the last 10 years with deposits worth Rs 2.3 lakh crore.
Out of these accounts, 56 per cent belong to women and 67 per cent accounts have been opened in rural/semi-urban areas. The deposits in these accounts are above Rs. 2.03 lakh crore and about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued in these accounts free of cost.
As per the Ministry of Finance, as of 12/07/2023, 49.49 crore accounts were opened under the scheme holding deposits worth Rs 2,00,958 crore.
The scheme seeks to not only help the poor in bringing their savings into the formal financial system but also provide an avenue to remit money to their families in villages besides taking them out of the clutches of local money lenders.
Total deposit balances under PMJDY Accounts was at Rs 1.31 lakh crore and average deposit per account stood at Rs 3,239.
The achievement comes just ahead of the sixth anniversary of PMJDY launch.
