Together with Chuni Goswami and Tulsidas Balram, Banerjee sparkled in the frontline in an era of Indian football when it did much better than it would even hope to today.
Banerjee was admitted to the hospital on February 6 due to severe chest infection and his condition deteriorated since then.
Former India captain PK Banerjee, who had won the gold medal in 1962 Asian Games, breathed his last at 83 in Kolkata on Friday after losing an elongated battle against chest infection.
The Asian Games gold medallist was suffering from sepsis and multi-organ failure due to pneumonia on a background of Parkinson's disease, dementia and heart ailments.
PK Banerjee represented India in two Olympics - Melbourne (1956) and Rome (1960). He was a key member of the gold-winning Indian team in 1962 Asian Games.
Suffering from respiratory problem due to pneumonia and with underlying history of Parkinson's disease, dementia and heart problem, the 83-year-old was put on life support on March 2.
Banerjee was on Monday put on ventilator and his condition was said to be critical.
The 83-year-old had previously been admitted to the hospital in January for electrolyte imbalance, urinary problem, Parkinson's disease and dementia. He had subsequently been discharged on January 23.
