The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had communicated to the ICC last week, citing security concerns across the border, as reason for refusing to send its team to Pakistan for the marquee ODI tournament, scheduled between February 19 to March 9, 2025.
However, Naqvi rubbished all reports, saying he has not received anything in writing, and if he receives an official communication, only then he can share it with the media and the Pakistan government.
The PCB confirmed the parting with the former South Africa opener on Monday, ahead of the white-ball team’s twin tours of Australia and Zimbabwe, where Pakistan will play six limited overs matches each.
Exuding confidence that the ICC Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, the country’s cricket board chief Mohsin Naqvi said all teams, including India, will take part in it. India haven’t sent their team to Pakistan since July 2008 due to political tensions between the two countries.
The runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament, Pakistan have named their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with Babar Azam leading a strong side after he was reinstated as their white-ball captain earlier this year.
The reason behind basing India entirely in Lahore could be to avoid the logistical and security hassles around their travel.
As per reliable sources, the team of selectors will be in Kakul to persuade Babar Azam to take up the role of captain for T20Is and all other formats, replacing the current captain Shaheen Shah Afridi.
The Pakistan Cricket Board is in talks with former New Zealand player Luke Ronchi to take over as head coach of their senior men's team, according to reports in Pakistan on Tuesday.
“There is no pressure on me. I had made a decision and I am revoking it. In India, we have examples of Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja,” Riaz said.
