Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif is the joint opposition candidate for the top post. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also in the fray for the prime ministerial post with his nomination papers approved on Sunday.
Rival parties in Pakistan have alleged that the July 25 vote was rigged by as Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won 116 out of the total 272 seats.
Khan's PTI emerged as the single largest party in the country's National Assembly after the July 25 election. However, it is short of numbers to form its government independently.
He also termed Modi's telephone call to Khan on his victory in the 2018 polls a welcoming sign to begin a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
