Rewind 2024: India’s bittersweet campaign in Paris

Last minute preparations, exposure camps abroad, TOPs funding, overlooking administrative mess-ups to pick the crème de la crème of Indian sports for the biggest show on earth that unfolded in Paris three years after COVID-19 pushed the Tokyo edition of the Olympics by a year.

Greece has given the world two essentials-democracy and the Olympics. This year’s Olympics thrilled us, surprised us, and moved us. Some of the moments were especially poignant.

Cheer for sport is a cheer for CCP

China’s reputation worsened after the safety of tennis star Peng Shuai, an alleged sexual assault victim, became a matter of international concern. Domestically, however, the Olympics are portrayed as something that benefits the Chinese people – a way for Chinese athletes to achieve glory and to showcase the Communist Party’s ability to execute a worldclass sporting event. The underlying narrative glorifies the regime and legitimises the CCP’s institutions and practices.

Start at the top

But the ad-hoc, arbitrary, and unaccountable throwing of money at athletes most of whom are at the beginning and/or peak of their careers and not at their respective journey’s end makes not only for humiliating optics but will prove counter-productive.
