Both Paris and Los Angeles made final presentations to IOC delegates before the formality of the rubber-stamp vote was taken.
"It's a big win and we are here to really enjoy it," said Paris 2024 bid co-chief Tony Estanguet.
Los Angeles was granted the right to stage the 2028 Olympics after cutting a deal with Paris.
President Emmanuel Macron was full throttle behind the bid too, as most of the French public.
Los Angeles had been in a race with Paris to host the 2024 Games.
Paris is seen as the favourite to win 2024, with Los Angeles likely being handed the 2028 Games.
The move will not be final until a vote of the IOC's roughly 100 members in July.
The IOC is scheduled to award the 2024 Games at a meeting in September.
Paris bid committee co-president Tony Estanguet described Sunday's dialogue with the delegation "constructive."
