During this week's General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia proposed an amendment to an IAEA safeguards resolution in an effort to legitimize their submarine deal in the context of the NPT.

What to do with Iran?

The Iran nuclear deal of 2015 restricted Iran’s time period to build a nuclear bomb, called the breakout period, to 10 years. This Donald Trump felt was too little and therefore walked out of the deal. Analysts now believe that since Trump walked out, Iran has already produced fissile material sufficient for two bombs. Any new deal will have to suss out these bombs and neutralize them.

In 2015, a major agreement between Iran and six other countries meant Iran accepted limits on its nuclear activities in return for an end to harsh penalties, or sanctions, that hurt its economy

Reviving a deal

The United States has no indication whether Iran will accept the offer; it has cautioned that the prospect of a meeting was a first step in what would be a lengthy, difficult process towards restoring the nuclear deal.

Iran & the N-deal

He has indicated what he calls “Tehran’s final and irreversible decision” on the issue in an effort to stem the raging controversy. Specifically, the country will comply with the 2015 nuclear deal only if America lifts the sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
