The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which was inserted to give effect to the Assam Accord and formed the basis of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam in 2019.
Assam, a state rich in history and culture, is no stranger to civil unrest and protests rooted in deep-seated issues of identity, governance, and development.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday that there will be no CAA, NRC or Uniform Civil Code in Bengal as these measures are intended to divide the country.
“It is strengthening the speculation that BJP’s top leadership and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s hand-inglove which is why Shah can come to Kolkata. Miss Banerjee has not condemned the hate speeches by three BJP leaders including Union minister who instigated the Delhi riots,”CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty said.
Miss Banerjee expressed concern over the communal clashes in Delhi that have claimed at least 42 lives and said that steps should be taken so that the situation doesn't aggravate further.
The minister also questioned the attitude of the Opposition over the clashes and said there is a continuous effort to spread confusion over CAA and NRC.
The EZC meeting, chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, discussed Left-wing extremism besides issues like coal-royalty revision, crimes and rail-link projects.
According to sources as protest rallies are being organised by different organisations against NRC and CAA, the OCs have been told to keep a close watch in their respective areas so as to maintain peace.
