In a major effort to enhance rural infrastructure in the northeast, the Ministry of Rural Development on Thursday sanctioned 88 roads spanning 782.155 kilometers, along with 55 bridges, in Meghalaya under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-III.

"I firmly believe that eastern India, and especially Northeast India, will be the engine of the country's growth in the 21st century. With this spirit, unprecedented work has been done in the last 7 years to accelerate the development of Arunachal Pradesh," he said.
It was stressed that the growth arising out of agriculture must satiate both the ecological and economic needs of the region and its people.
