The eastern zone bench of National Green Tribunal has directed the Odisha Government agencies in Nayagarh district to reclaim the encroached patches reserve forestland and slap environmental compensation against the violators for damage caused to forest classified land.
Despite the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), rat-hole coal mining continues unabated in Assam, particularly in the central part of the state.
The existing interim DSR, which was being used to justify sand mining, was invalid as it had not been submitted to SEIAA for approval, the NGT reiterated in the order.
The original application was registered suo motu by the green tribunal on the basis of the news item titled "Saving Kashmir Brown Bears is a Race Against Time Wildlife SOS and J&K Wildlife Protection Dept. take challenge" appearing in a media outlet in July 2024.
Since the mining was carried out in excess; the mining thereof would amount to illegal sand mining.
The remaining premises, it said, either are vacant or are small shops which are running with permissible activities.
The matter was listed for further consideration on April 22.
The Odisha State Pollution Control Board is directed to conduct computation of Environmental Compensation and royalty and other dues and recovery of the same from the violator state, the NGT bench comprising Amit Sthalekar and Saibal Dasgupta ordered in a 15-page judgment.
The NGT’s direction was in response to the petition moved by two local residents alleging extensive degradation of the river bed and extraction.
