The eastern zone bench of National Green Tribunal has directed the Odisha Government agencies in Nayagarh district to reclaim the encroached patches reserve forestland and slap environmental compensation against the violators for damage caused to forest classified land.
Despite the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), rat-hole coal mining continues unabated in Assam, particularly in the central part of the state.

The orders were issued by NGT’s Principal Bench consisting of Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member Prof A Senthil Vel.
The NGT, pronouncing an interim order of a five-year-old petition, asked the Woodhill Hillways (JV) and Hillways Construction Company Private limited to deposit the amount with the State Pollution Control Board within two months.
That was in gross violation of the mining plan as well as the environmental clearance, Sankar Prasad Pani, counsel for the petitioner, had pointed out.
A NGT bench headed by its chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, in an order passed on February 23, observed that the abattoir was discharging untreated effluent and abstracting groundwater illegally.
