Seeking review of the new criminal laws, CPI(M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami on Tuesday warned that these laws will “erode liberties and legal safeguards” of the citizens by arming the state with more sweeping powers.
In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor of the University Padma Prof. (Dr) Mahesh Verma called it a revolutionary step of the government. He said that these three laws have evolved the judicial system from the colonial era to match the requirements of ‘adhunik bharat’.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam aim to empower citizen to replace the criminal laws continued to date from the British era.
The inaugural session on May 27th featured Justice P N Prakash, former Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Guest, and Prof Ranbir Singh, former Chairperson of the drafting committee for the new criminal laws, as the Guest of Honour.
Calling the three Bills "transformative", Modi said they are a testament to India's commitment to reform.
