NDPS act

Punjab Police arrested 676 drug smugglers in a week

5.57 kilogram (kg) heroin, 17 kg opium, 25 kg ganja, seven quintals of poppy husk, and 2.25 lakh intoxicant pills among other drugs were recovered in cordon and search operations in drug-affected areas and installing check-posts on vulnerable routes across the state.

Strange Justice

At a time when Indian drug enforcement agencies seem to be waging a war against occasional drug users, many countries like the USA, at whose instance the NDPS Act was drafted, have decriminalised drug consumption. Alarmed by the possible misuse of provisions of the NDPS Act and contrary to the Government’s stance in the Aryan Khan case, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has recommended amendments to the NDPS Act that would decriminalise possession of small quantities of drugs for personal consumption.

Now get rewarded for countering narcotics in Punjab

The move is aimed at further strengthening the campaign against drugs, whose progress is now being monitored by the Chief Minister personally as head of the newly-constituted consultative group for the scheme.
